More than 3,000 jobs lost among Argentina’s leathergoods manufacturers

CIMA, the main organisation representing manufacturers of finished leathergoods in Argentina, has said the number of member companies that have had to close their factories since the government of President Mauricio Macri took office at the end of 2015 has now gone up to 70. Exactly a year ago, CIMA put the figure at 50.

President Macri’s government set out from the beginning of its mandate to make the Argentinean market more open to exports.

In recent comments to local media, CIMA president, Ariel Aguilar, said: “Our members insist that it’s becoming more and more difficult for them to run their businesses and many factories are running at around 55% of capacity and we have lost more than 3,000 jobs.”
