Leather chemicals manufacturer Lanxess has said  a new laboratory that its urethane systems business unit is opening in Italy will help it support market needs in a variety of applications, including leather.

The new laboratory will be located in Latina, near Rome, and will open during the third quarter of 2018. Dr Markus Eckert, head of the urethanes business unit, said on announcing the development that customer demand is growing for materials that have a lower carbon footprint and are free from volatile organic compounds.

He said this, plus increasing regulatory pressure, is driving high levels of interest in water-based technologies and that the Latina facility will work on developing new products that meet this need.

Specific to leather, Lanxess said the developments that come out of the new laboratory will be capable of supporting market needs in a variety of coatings and adhesives applications in leather, as well as in other application areas.
