Audi chief executive arrested
Car manufacturer Audi has confirmed that its chief executive, Rupert Stadler, was taken into custody by police on June 18 at the request of prosecutors in Munich. Sales director, Abraham Schot, will lead the company in the interim. Audi has made it clear this is a temporary measure while the authorities clarify the circumstances that led to the arrest of Mr Stadler.

Reuters has said Mr Stadler’s detention is to prevent him from hampering police investigations into the role of Audi in the emissions scandal that hit parent group, Volkswagen, in 2015; it had used software to produce falsely low emissions results for some of its diesel engines.

In January 2017, Volkswagen entered into a plea agreement with the US authorities, telling them that its engineers had originally borrowed the software from Audi, which is why Audi is now under investigation.
