Automated leather cutting still presents growth potential

Automated cutting technology still has tremendous potential for growth in the automotive leather market, according to Holger Max-Lang, managing director for the central and eastern Europe region for Lectra. Mr Max-Lang took up this role at the cutting technology provider at the start of 2018.

He said at the 2018 Freiberg Leather Days event that, in 2016, according to Lectra’s calculations, around 90% of all the leather kits used for automotive seating were cut using traditional dies.

“There are between 120 and 150 digital cutting machines in place in cutting rooms at the moment,” he said, “but there is good growth potential there because the total market size is between 750 and 800 machines.”
