Lanxess reacts to European Commission NMP restrictions

According to leather chemicals manufacturer Lanxess, this means tanners are now going to have to offer greater transparency on how they make their leather and offer clarity that it is in keeping with the NMP restrictions. It has said it can provide the leather industry with “suitable alternatives” that will allow tanners to make NMP-free leather without any compromise on quality.
In a recent statement on this subject, Dr Martin Kleban of the Lanxess leather business unit said: “We removed NMP from the leather chemicals in our product range a long time ago. By developing suitable alternatives, we can now offer a range of more than 30 NMP-free binders for finishing and enable our customers to operate consistently without the use of NMP. We have been offering solutions in accordance with the REACH regulation for many years.”
Modern, future-oriented leather production must reconcile economic interests, environmental compatibility, and consumer benefits, Lanxess has said, adding that achieving this balance is the fundamental principle of its Sustainable Leather Management initiative.
