Furniture companies are telling consumers: ‘bring your own leather’

03/04/2018
A growing number of furniture manufacturers in North America are allowing customers to source their own leather and other materials as offering a customised service becomes more and more important.

This is one of the findings of a study commissioned by cutting technology provider Lectra. It published the study at the end of March under the title, ‘What’s Rearranging The North American Upholstered Furniture Industry? The state of the upholstered furniture industry survey’.

“Creating a home interior that reflects personality and personal tastes is a common desire among furniture buyers of all ages,” the study says. “The rising number of companies proposing services that allow customers to customise their sofas using their own material or leather attests to that.”

The report goes on to explain that many of today’s consumers, especially millennials, have grown up regarding product customisation as standard, but it warns that “instant gratification” is also the norm for them. Buyers in the younger demographic may not be willing to wait weeks or more for  new furniture to be delivered.
