David Peters: Meat producers should do more to support leather industry

27/03/2018
In his latest blog entry, regular columnist David Peters explains that the leather industry is essentially in the recycling business as it takes a waste material, hides, and turns it into a useful material, leather.

He says this by-product of the meat industry “has provided a consistent flow of good throughout the history of mankind”. Despite this, he adds: “It seems there is a fundamental disconnect between hides and the industry’s incredible ability to recover a waste material.”

In light of the service it offers to them, global meat producers should do more to support the leather industry, Mr Peters argues.

“Without the leather industry meat packers would have a disposal problem as the only efficient and productive use for a raw hide is converting it to leather,” he says in this new column.

He points to “a clear lack of involvement” from beef-producing companies in the promotion of the features, benefits and advantages of leather. Their support could help the leather industry shift from a defensive position to an offensive one.

Although hides only represent a small portion of the revenue of meat producers, the impact of not effectively and efficiently managing their hide production would be “devastating”, he insists.
