Leather is “the only viable solution” to meat industry waste
The UK Leather Federation has presented a stout defence of the global leather industry in a strongly worded letter to The Daily Telegraph.

UKLF responded to an article that the Telegraph published on March 23, in which one of its comment writers urged automotive manufacturers to stop using leather in the car interiors. The article displayed, UKLF said, “a quite staggering level of misinformation and ignorance”.

In the letter, which you can read in full in our blog section, UKLF director, Dr Kerry Senior, presented the leather sector as a modern, sustainable and safe industry, which takes a waste product from meat production, and turns it into a beautiful and functional material. “Leather production is sustainable which, unlike the manufacture of plastics from fossil fuels, uses a renewable by-product as a raw material,” he said, “and applies heavily-regulated chemistries to produce a material that is versatile, durable and beautiful.”

He went on to refer to the leather sector as “the only viable and sustainable solution to the disposal of over 7 million tonnes of waste per year from the meat industry”. Specific to automotive, he flagged up the Scottish Leather Group as an example of a company that has attained very high standards in leather production and environmental stewardship.

He concluded by inviting Telegraph readers to become more informed about the reality of the global leather industry by visiting the Nothing To Hide series of online essays and the website of the Leather Naturally campaign.
