JBS Couros focuses on versatility in new collection
Following the launch in 2017 of the Authentic collection of leather designed specifically for furniture manufacturers, the world’s largest producer of leather, JBS Couros is turning its attention to the footwear and leathergoods market.

At the recent India International Leather Fair in Chennai (February 1-3), the company told leatherbiz.com that it plans to launch a worldwide crust leather collection targeted mainly at the Asian footwear market. The collection will be called Cambré.

The material used in the collection will come from Argentinian, Brazilian and US hides. It has chosen to offer crust rather than finished leather so as to offer greater versatility and added value to leather finishing tanneries and shoemakers.

JBS Couros selected Asia as the target market for the Cambré collection following extensive market research. Representatives of the company recently spent two weeks in Asia visiting potential customers to learn about their needs. It will focus its marketing strategy for the collection mainly on China, India and Southeast Asia.

It is aiming to make an impact on the accessible luxury footwear market, citing leather’s good penetration in this segment as a key reason. It also believes shoe manufacturers in this segment do not view price as the most important factor when choosing which raw material to use in their products.

JBS Couros maintains that leather still has a role to play in footwear, despite the ground it has lost in recent years to synthetic materials. It cites a lack of effective branding that demonstrates leather’s versatility and natural quality as a reason for this.

At the same time, Conceria Priante, JBS’s unit in Italy which focuses on the luxury and high-end markets, is launching a new collection for the leathergoods market called Absolute Freshness. The collection will include products made in Italy using a wider range of JBS raw materials from around the world.

The new collections will officially launched at the forthcoming APLF exhibition in Hong Kong (March 14-16).
