New Zealand tannery fined over gas leak incident

30/10/2017
New Zealand tannery Tasman Tanning has been fined NZ$380,000 ($261,000) after one of its workers was exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas due to a leak.

The incident occurred in April 2016 and resulted in the worker losing consciousness twice. As well as the fine, the tannery was ordered to pay the worker in question NZ$18,000 ($12,000) in reparations.

The investigation into the incident found multiple failings, including a lack of training and warnings. It also found the company had failed to provide personal gas monitors.

In 2012, Tasman Tanning was fined after four workers were exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas.
