Success for University of Cincinnati-ALCA summer course
14/09/2017
Training events took place in early August at a pilot tannery at the US Department of Agriculture’s eastern regional research centre near Philadelphia.
Instructors for the course included Mainul Haque from Conneaut Leather, Stefano Giannoni from TFL, Dr Luis Zugno from Buckman, Jose Gallegos from Elementis, Dave Powell from Chemtan and Steve Lange from the Leather Research Laboratory. Together they provided attendees with more than 100 years of practical experience and theoretical knowledge in the art of converting raw hides into leather.
Fifteen attendees, from tanneries in the US, China and Taiwan, made automotive-grade chrome and chrome-free leather, waterproof leather suitable for footwear, buffed pig lining leather and a heavy, full vegetable double butt.
Chemicals were supplied by TFL, Chemtan, Elementis and Buckman, allowing attendees to work with up-to-date technology designed to meet the needs of a modern tannery in regards to water, labour and wastewater regulation requirements.
Plans are already being made for the course to be held again in 2018.
