JBS hires “globally recognised expert” to run food safety

A former official at the food safety and inspection service (FSIS) of the US department of agriculture, Alfred Almaza, has joined Brazilian packer and tanning group JBS as the global head of its food safety and quality assurance programmes. The company said it hoped the move would help it expand its access to global meat markets.

Mr Almaza worked for FSIS for nearly 40 years. On announcing his appointment, JBS described him as being “globally recognised as an expert on food safety, risk management, the development of modern inspection systems, and international sanitary standards”,

In March this year, federal police in Brazil raided 21 meat factories run by different companies in different parts of Brazil. This followed the disclosure of bribes to meat inspection staff, raising suspicions that some of the meat leaving the factories concerned may not have been fit for human consumption. Brazil’s standing in meat export markets suffered as a result.
