Turkey has too many leather graduates
02/08/2017
In recent remarks on the subject, industry commentators have said that 10 higher education institutions across Turkey are offering courses in leather technology at the moment.
The engineering faculty at Ege University in Izmir is the best known because it’s had its own leather engineering department for 30 years. It offers a four-year course and a bachelor’s degree at the end.
Nine other colleges in different parts of Turkey offer two-year course in leather technology, at the end of which students receive a formal qualification as a leather technicians. In total, these courses are producing an estimated 200 graduates per year.
However, owing to consolidation in the domestic industry over the last five years, only 30% of these students, at most, are finding jobs in tanneries at the end of their studies, either in Turkey or overseas. The situation has attracted the attention of the Turkish Higher Education Council, which says it would like to help improve the job prospects of the young people completing these courses.
