US livestock farmers call for investigation into JBS

A cattle farmers’ association in the US, Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA), has confirmed that it has sent a detailed report to President Donald Trump requesting “a full investigation and strict antitrust enforcement action in the wake of the unfolding corruption charges against JBS”.

Its report, which runs to 11 pages, cites news reports that give details of alleged bribery of politicians by JBS. “A full and complete investigation is needed to determine the full scope of JBS’s potentially unlawful activities in the United States and the impact that any such unlawful activities have had on the single largest segment of American agriculture, live cattle industry,” the group wrote.

It suggested an investigation could show that JBS has “built its monopolistic US livestock and meat empire through unlawful means” and that, if this happens, every US-based asset owned by JBS “should be immediately divested”.
