Surge in export sales of US wet salted hides

Compared to the same period in 2016, these figures represent increases of 17% in volume and of 19% in value, reflecting the higher volumes of cattle going to slaughter in the US this year compared to last, although a fall in hide prices that tanners have been longing for was not evident in this first quarter of the year.
On average, during the first three months of 2016, wet salted hides from the US had an export price of $63.80. In the corresponding period this year, the average price was $65.43, a rise of 2.5%.
As has been the case for many months, the figures for exports of wet blue from the US were less positive. Between January and March 2017, overseas tanners bought just over 1.5 million wet blue hides, paying a total of $142 million. These figures represent declines of 6% in volume and of 5% in value compared to the same months in 2016.
The average export price for US wet blue in the first three months of 2016 was $91.91 per piece. In the same period this year, the average price was $94.73.
