US hides sellers benefits from NAFTA, says USHSLA

NAFTA has generally helped the industry, specifically in Mexico, it said, but modernisation would be welcome.
“Due to the integration of the North American auto manufacturing industry in recent years, US cattle hides are now the primary raw material used in Mexico for the production of leather used in seat upholstery, steering wheels and other interior cabin applications,” said USHSLA president Stephen Sothmann.
“For industries on both sides of the border, NAFTA has created a mutually beneficial relationship. In 2016 alone, the US exported approximately $159 million worth of hides and skins products to Mexico, the majority of which were used by the auto industry.”
The comments go on to list regulatory and inspection complications the US hides and skins industry has faced in Mexico in recent years.
“We believe that NAFTA can be modernised to incorporate standards that enhance our market access and promote transparency and efficient trade,” Mr Sothmann added.
