Leather Pipeline says industry may be on verge of new era
Our exclusive fortnightly market intelligence report, the Leather Pipeline, highlights a change in the relationship between the supply of and demand for leather, suggesting that the industry is on the verge of a new era.

“Until now, the majority of players had been convinced that we were just in an ever-repeating historical cycle between supply and demand,” the report says in its May 16 edition. It cites the ovine pipeline as a good example of this; a drop in demand has prompted suppliers to send skins to landfill or dispose of them by other means to protect prices.

This week’s Leather Pipeline also suggests that the European leather industry is starting to feel the effects of anti-meat campaigns. “It is far less of a problem for the consumer,” it points out, “but many global brands have put pressure on their suppliers to deal with animal welfare issues.” It says brands need to take into account the differing approaches to animal welfare in different regions of the globe when laying out their requirements.
