Leather chemicals manufacturer Smit & zoon has published a new report on corporate social responsibility (CSR), giving details of its performance in this area in 2016.

Chief executive, Hans van Haarst, said the report will help achieve transparency in the leather industry and help improve it.

Egbert Dikkers, leader of innovation and sustainability at Smit & zoon, said the company wants to “play a pioneering role” when it comes to CSR and act as a catalyst for making the leather industry more sustainable.

He said the specific focus is on areas in which Smit & zoon believes it can make the greatest impact: health and safety, water use and waste management. He said he was proud of progress the company had been able to make in these areas in 2016. The examples he pointed to ranged from Smit & zoon’s use of recycled material in its packaging, the removal of solvents from its products and the launch of tanneryofthefuture.org, a free-of-charge online self-assessment questionnaire to help tanners gauge their performance on sustainability.
