University of Alicante may get footwear department
27/03/2017
The department would be based at the university’s campus in Elda, a town with a rich history of shoemaking and the home of the national footwear museum.
Ms Esteve said the department would be a vital tool given the importance of footwear manufacturing to the region. It would serve as a hub for research, as well as providing a platform to raise awareness about the footwear industry and to share technological resources.
It would incorporate the key shoemaking towns of the region as well as organisations such as footwear industry research centre Inescop and footwear industry association FICE.
Manuel Palomar, Dean of the University of Alicante, described it as “an interesting project”, which could be accomplished. He said that the proposal was now under consideration and that the finer details would now need to be discussed. He raised the possibility of the university creating a Master’s degree in shoemaking, as well as programmes related to footwear design. He said the format of any courses would depend on the needs of the footwear industry in the region.
