New David Peters column: 2017 looks like it could be a terrific year

Regular blogger David Peters says in a new column that 2017 is shaping up to be a good year for the leather industry.

In a new blog entry, ‘The old 45 is scratched’, he says mainstream footwear brands and manufacturers are beginning to examine ways in which they can use more leather.

However, he also issues one or two warnings. The first is that price is still very important and an increase in raw material costs at this stage could scare buyers away again. The second is that change is taking place in the global leather supply chain, with tanners happy to explore new sources of raw material as alternatives to traditional options, including US hides.

“This is the first semblance of sustainable good news our industry has seen in many years,” Mr Peters says in the column. “Let’s hope we don’t overcook the enthusiasm by raising prices as this will definitely throw cold water on what looks like a terrific year.”
