No end in sight for Pakistan’s leather export declines

28/02/2017
During first seven months of current financial year, July 2016 to January 2017, the leather industry in Pakistan brought in export revenues of $ 545.1 million, a decline of 7.2% year on year.

Finished leather exports declined by 7.5% in value to $194.8 million. The fall for leathergoods was 6.8% to $294.3 million, while footwear exports brought in 8.5% less with revenues of $56 million.

On releasing the figures, the chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association, Anjum Zafar, said export revenues have been declining consistently for months and that the cumulative drop in the last year-and-a-half is more than 30%. He said the high cost of doing business in Pakistan and ineffective support from government make it likely that this trend will continue.
