Spanish tannery selected for LVMH programme
Luxury group LVMH has revealed details of the second edition of its artist-in-residence programme following the success of the inaugural edition last year.

Between January and June 2016, French artist Thomas Mailaender took up residency at the Tanneries Roux leather making facility in Romans-sur-Isère. During his stay, he created 30 works, all printed on leather.

LVMH has now invited French sculptor and visual artist Amandine Guruceaga to spend five months at Spanish tannery Riba Guixà. Located near Barcelona, the family-run company was founded in 1932. LVMH acquired a stake in the company in 2015.

It is known for its tanning and dying of Entrefino lambskin. Its advanced knowledge of leather processing and colours allows it to offer 22,000 different shades of leather. With that in mind, this new residency takes colour as its inspiration.

Ms Guruceaga will work closely with the staff at the tannery during her time there, taking advantage of their production resources. The pieces that she produces there will be published in a book.

“This is a unique opportunity to work with leather, one of humanity’s oldest materials and one that is rendered spectacularly beautiful by the infinite palette of colours created at the Riba Guixà tannery,” she said.
