USHSLA voices concern about the global political situation

On releasing full-year figures for 2016 for US hide exports, the president of the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA), Stephen Sothmann, said industry leaders in the US are confident of a good year in 2017 because of increased demand for leather, especially in footwear.

However, Mr Sothmann also said that around 90% of US cattle hides go to export markets. Last year, 28.2 million wet salted and wet blue hides were shipped from the US for processing in other countries. And given its dependence on trade with overseas markets, USHSLA is monitoring the global political situation closely, the organisation’s president said.

He explained: “We have concerns about the political rhetoric surrounding international trade of late. It is our hope that any policy revisions to the existing international trading system will not negatively impact a thriving US industry’s ability to compete just as our market is beginning to expand.”
