India’s domestic annual footwear consumption nears 5 billion pairs
Council for Leather Exports chairman for northern India, RK Jalan, has said the organisation now calculates the country’s yearly footwear consumption as 3.71 pairs per person, on average.

With India’s population currently at more than 1.3 billion, this would mean total domestic footwear consumption of close to 5 billion pairs.

While this figure represents a substantial increase on the 2.2 pairs per person the organisation offered one year ago, Mr Jalan, who runs Arvind Footwear in Kanpur, said the new number includes informal footwear such as flip-flops. Although millions of pairs of these informal shoes sell to Indian consumers, he said they were almost all imported from China.
