CLE hosts second Designers’ Fair in Chennai

01/02/2017
India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) held a second edition of its Designers’ Fair in Chennai from Februar 1-3, in parallel with the 2017 India International Leather Fair.

As at the inaugural event last year, Naresh Bhasin, CLE chairman for the western India region, was at the head of efforts to bring footwear and accessory designers from the Americas and Europe into contact with buyers and manufacturers in India to give made-in-India products a design boost. Once again, Mr Bhasin worked with two consultants to bring designers to Chennai to take part in the Designers’ Fair: Karen Giberson, president of the New York-based Accessories Council, and Mallorca-based footwear producer and exporter Antonio Munar.

Almost 40 designers and design institutes signed up to take part, almost double last year’s total, which Mr Bhasin said on opening the event that this shows that Indian manufacturers want to move ahead in terms of design. “The best way to predict the future is to create the future,” he said. “We want to make things happen rather than let them happen to us.”

For his part, Antonio Munar told Indian manufacturers and buyers: “These designers, with their ideas and know-how, can help you make your products look better than they do now and you have to take advantage of the fact that they have travelled to Chennai to take part in this event.”
