New David Peters blog on the sounds coming out of the White House

David Peters’ first column of 2017 paints a worrying picture of the possible implications for the leather business of early comments coming from the new US administration.

In a new blog entry, entitled ‘Alternative facts with the little red (yellow) rooster’, Mr Peters says that because hides are a globally traded commodity, companies across the leather industry recognise “the cultural challenges in navigating a multitude of economic, political, social and ethical guidelines in order to find the highest value obtainable for their raw material”.

He said the US has benefited from this because more than 90% of its hides are exported.

Ideas such as establishing a retaliatory 35% import tariff on US-based companies who shift jobs to overseas factories, or a 20% border tax would have what David Peters called “unintended consequences” and bring pressure to bear on existing supply chains and on price.
