UNIC helps Italian police uncover false ‘leathergoods’

Italy’s main tanning industry association, UNIC, contributed to a recent police investigation exposing false use on labelling of the Italian term “vera pelle”, or “genuine leather”.

Police inspected a lorry travelling from Prague to Italy and became suspicious of the load because, while it included thousands of wallets and key-rings marked “vera pelle”, the stated customs value was low.

They engaged the help of UNIC and tests showed the material used in the products contained little or no leather.

It emerged that the products were made in China and were exported from there to the Czech Republic for transportation to retailers in Italy. Police discovered an importer near Florence that, in the first five months of 2016, had distributed almost 20,000 of these wallets to small retailers throughout Italy.
