Cincinnati Leather Research Laboratory announces course dates for 2017

24/01/2017
The Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati has announced several educational opportunities for 2017.

Its two-day Leather Orientation Course will take place twice: April 12-13 and July 19-20. Subjects this course covers includes the physical structure of leather, hide supply, differences between types of hides and skins, wet-end and finishing operations, regulations and testing and customer acceptance issues.

The orientation course takes place on the university campus and costs $925 to attend, although there is a discount for additional participants from the same company.

Later in the year, the laboratory team will run its Quality Assurance for Leather workshop, with the course running on September 13-14.

This is only the second year in which the quality assurance course has been on offer. It is aimed at people working in the leather industry who need to have “a comprehensive understanding” of quality-control methods in leather production. The course is a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory work. Participants will be able to perform tests on samples of their own or on material provided.

Previous participants have emphasised the value of the sessions in the laboratory as a way of demonstrating the concepts raised in classroom discussions. The cost of this course is $1,050 per person, which includes a copy of Jean Tancous’s book ‘Skin, hide and leather defects’.
