Brazilian leather exports may have turned a corner with October growth
18/11/2016
In October this year, exports of finished and semi-finished hides from Brazilian tanneries brought in revenues of $161.9 million, according to figures from the ministry of development, industry and overseas trade.
Executive president of tanning industry association CICB, José Fernando Bello, said he was particularly pleased to see this increase in revenues on the back of decrease in the volume of exports. Shipments of 14.3 million square-metres of hides in October 2016 correspond to a decline of almost 10% compared to the same month in 2015.
Mr Bello said the rise in revenue was down to a recovery of the international market and also to an increase in the share of total shipments that finished leather had in October.
The October figures may represent a turnaround. For the year so far, leather exports are down in value by 12% compared to the first ten months of 2015. The total export revenue between January and October 2016 was $1.7 billion. Finished leather accounted for more than 60% of this total, two points up on the share that finished leather had over the same period in 2015.
