Scottish Leather Group grows its workforce

The Scottish Leather Group has grown its workforce by 6.8% in the last two years, from 561 permanent employees in 2014 to 599 now. The group’s human resources manager, Callum MacInnes, shared the figures during a presentation at University of Northampton on November 10 during an ‘Industry Engagement Day’ organised by the Institute of Creative Leather Technologies.

He went on to say that growth at the Scottish Leather Group has been so robust in recent years that it has had to engage agency workers to keep up with demand from its customers. Including these agency workers, 920 people are currently working at the group’s tanneries in Glasgow, Paisley and Bridge of Weir.

“We were finding it hard to recruit qualified technical people,” he said, “so we decided to grow our own. We started a two-year vocational education programme in 2011, which 128 students have successfully taken part in so far. And in 2012 we set up our own apprenticeship academy, for which we are now working with our third cohort. These programmes have won a number of awards in Scotland but we are keen to improve them further. We have aspirations to have the best-trained leather professionals in the business.”

Mr MacInnes also said the group has acquired extra space for tanning in Glasgow for Bridge of Weir Leather and has moved most of its chemicals to a rented store near the city’s main airport to free up more production space at its Bridge of Weir site. He added that the Scottish Leather Group has also invested heavily in new tanning machinery in recent years to carry out this expanded level of production.
