Turkey keeps up the fight against FMD

Some years ago, the European part of Turkey secured ‘free from FMD’ status, and this has since been applied to the western part of Anatolia too.
However, Turkey is a large country with 18 million head of cattle, with animals frequently being transported from eastern regions to the cities of the west for slaughter. The total number of animals moved across Turkey in this way is calculated at between 4 million and 5 million every year.
In its ongoing fight against FMD, the country’s ministry for food and agriculture has set up ‘control gates’ as quarantine zones, where animals undergo health checks before being allowed to continue their journey westwards.
Vaccination programmes are also continuing.
