Senior leather industry figure dies
A senior figure in the leather industry has died. John Basford, known throughout the industry for his work at leather chemicals firm Schill & Seilacher and as a consltant, as well as for his involvement with the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies at the University of Northampton, died on September 14 after a period of illness.

Mr Basford completed his education in leather technology in Northampton under John Sharphouse and Colin Jones in 1960. He was already working in the industry at that time, having taken a job at the British Chrome Tanning Company, a major manufacturer of glazed kid leather.

His relationship with Shill & Seilacher began in the early 1980s. He worked in marketing and product distribution roles, but was a highly experienced leather technologist, particularly with regard to wet-end processes.

In 2015 he was awarded the UK Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists’ Axel Landmann award in recognition of his “significant contribution” to the industry.
