New private import rules could hurt Argentinean leathergoods brands

Argentinean leather industry association CIMA has said new regulations allowing online shoppers in the South American country to buy from overseas leathergoods and shoe brands without paying import duties will hurt domestic manufacturers. The organisation went further and said the practice constitutes unfair competition.

New rules mean each consumer in Argentina can import articles with a combined value of up to $5,000 per year. CIMA has said this means a handbag made in Europe, which after proper payment of import duties, might be available to Argentinean consumers for one price in a leathergoods store can now be delivered direct to their homes for almost half that price, making locally made products less competitive.
