Packers in Argentina hold back tax payments as costs soar

25/07/2016
Meat companies in Argentina have begun to withhold tax payments and have threatened to escalate the practice if costs continue to go up.

One packer with slaughter capacity of 10,000 head per month has complained of montly electricity costs rising from around $25,000 per month to nearer $80,000. Others in the industry have spoken of gas prices now being 20 times higher than a year ago.

With the price packers can secure for meat and for hides going down, many companies have said they could struggle to stay in business.
