Total exports of agricultural products from the EU increased 5.7% year-on-year in 2015 to €129 billion, according to a new report. This made the EU the world’s top agri-food exporter.

“Our trade performance continues to be a real good news story for the EU agri-food sector,” said Phil Hogan, EU commissioner for agriculture and rural development.

The strong performance was attributed to a diversification of exports. The EU has also succeeded in finding new markets for its agricultural products, as well as strengthening ties with existing partners, such as China. Roughly half of the total gain in exports came from increased trade with China.

The top five destinations for EU agri-food exports in 2015 were: US, China, Switzerland, Russia and Japan.
