Einstein's leather jacket up for auction
Auction house Christie’s has put a leather jacket worn by Albert Einstein up for sale. The jacket, which Christie’s estimates to be worth between £40,000 and £60,000, is worn by Einstein in many photos taken at the peak of his career in the 1930s. The first were taken shortly after he permanently moved to the US after fleeing the Nazi regime in Germany. Made by Levi Strauss, in an American style, it seems to encapsulate this regeneration of Einstein, according to Christie’s.
The current owner of the jacket reports that it has the odour of tobacco smoke, due to Einstein often having smoked a pipe.
The jacket will be sold alongside the physicist’s Lépine pocket-watch.
