Farmers in Indonesia urged to end slaughter of cattle with anthrax

20/06/2016
Farmers in Gorontalo province in Indonesia have been told by animal husbandry officials to stop slaughtering cattle infected with anthrax. Reports in the region say more than 100 cattle have tested positive for anthrax and more than 20 animals have died.

But because farmers have slaughtered some infected animals, a number of people have begun to show signs of cutaneous anthrax. Some of these cases have occured when people came into contact with carcases of infected animals, but officials also believe meat from some of the infected cattle has gone on sale in some communities.
