Polarised views expected at Hong Kong TPP debate

29/03/2016
Representatives from the French and Italian footwear federations will join global counterparts at the Global Retail Footwear Conference (GRFC) in Hong Kong this week (March 31).

France’s Claude Eric Paquin and Italy’s Tommaso Cancellara will speak on global trade and the Transpacific Partnership (TPP), and are expected to have different views to Leslie Gallin, a board member of American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) and Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA).

The US footwear industry is set to benefit from the TPP alongside countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, while Europeans could potentially lose out as they are not included in the deal. The US and Europe are debating their own agreement, the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership).

Joining them in the debate will be Lu Hua, director of the footwear committee for the China Leather Industry Association, while other topics discussed on the day will include ecommerce and millennial customers.

The GRFC takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, to coincide with the Asia Pacific Leather Fair.
