New Cromogenia wet-end product points to less sodium sulfide and 50% lower COD

Cromogenia’s Ricardo Micó has told World Leather that the new product will allow tanners to use lower levels of sodium sulfide in their beamhouses. “We’ve carried out extensive laboratory tests on this and have now begun to roll it out in various countries,” he said, “but this is the fruit of seven or eight years’ work at least. It may seem a simple thing to do, but we have had to examine percentages, times, pH levels and so on very carefully at each stage and make the necessary adjustments to make sure the liming process takes no more time than tanners are used to and that there is no compromise on the quality of the leather they can produce from their raw material.”
Over and above that, he said early results are showing improvements in quality, with a cleaner, more open grain on hides processed using Pelambre Eco.
In addition, tests with the new product have shown a decrease in COD of at least 50%, Mr Micó said, with wastewater being easier to treat as a result of lower levels of sodium sulfide.
