New Rabat clusters will underpin Morocco’s leather growth

10/03/2016
The leather industry in Morocco maintains that three new clusters to be set up in and around the city of Rabat, one each for shoes, leathergoods and leather garments, can generate 35,000 new jobs by 2020, more than doubling the leather-sector workforce in the north African country.

Official figures from export promotions agency Maroc Export suggest 295 companies are active in the industry at the moment, employing a total of 21,000 people.

Government expectations are that the new Rabat clusters will bring about an increase in export values from levels of around $410 million in 2014 to $565 million by 2020, a jump of almost 40%.
