Five JBS abattoirs halt production as stocks build up

Packer and tanning group JBS has announced that it has halted production temporarily at five of abattoirs in Brazil, saying it wants to bring production levels into line with stocks and with the volume of cattle being offered by farmers for slaughter.

It said the plants would put cattle processing on hold for around three weeks. Two of the abattoirs are in Mato Grosso, one is in Mato Grosso do Sul, one in Goiás and one in Pará.

On making the announcement, JBS also said economic difficulties in Brazil were forcing many consumers to eat less beef and to switch to less expensive choices, including chicken and pork.
