Double-digit declines in volume and value for Brazilian beef exports in 2015
12/01/2016
This total would represent a decline of 18.4% compared to the figure for 2014.
Packers’ industry body Abrafrigo said its member companies shipped 1.36 million tonnes of beef to overseas markets last year, giving a decline in volume year on year of 11.6%.
Abrafrigo said one of the principal causes of the lower figures last year was weak demand in three key markets: Russia, Venezuela and Hong Kong. It said Hong Kong had imported less Brazilian beef because controls over imports coming into from an overseas origin via Hong Kong (in the process known as triangulation) became much stricter last year.
On a brighter note, with direct shipments to China permitted from May 2015 onwards, Brazilian packers were able to export 97,500 tonnes of beef to that important and growing market by the end of the calendar year, bringing in revenues of $475 million.
