“New China” wants sophisticated meat products, OECD says

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said meat producers in South America have a good opportunity to increase their share of the market in China if they can convince Chinese consumers of the quality of their products and present them as a “sophisticated” option.

Ángel Melguizo, OECD director for Latin America and the Caribbean, addressed a meeting of foreign affairs ministers from the region in Cartagena, Colombia, towards the end of December. Under the heading Economic Perspectives for Latin America in 2016, his talk made it clear that China is a changing market and that Latin American companies may need to change their strategy for dealing with trading partners there.

“There is a new China,” Mr Melguizo told the ministers, “and it’s not a China in crisis. Growth rates may be lower, but they may also be more sustainable now. There is an emerging urban middle class that is helping to change the demand picture in the whole Chinese market, not least by seeking high-quality food.”

He said packer firms in Latin America needed to show that they offer added value to consumers in China and to present the meat they offer as “a sophisticated product”.
