USHSLA supports the Trans-Pacific Partnership

Twelve countries (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the US and Vietnam) reached agreement on TPP on October 5.
USHSLA president, Stephen Sothmann, issued a statement saying his organisation had long been a supporter of the trade partnership because of the opportunities it believes TPP will give to hides and skins producers, processors, traders and exporters in the US.
“The agreement will reduce or eliminate import tariffs on US products in key leather- and footwear-producing countries, such as Vietnam and Japan,” Mr Sothmann said, “enhancing the competitiveness of US firms in these markets.”
TPP will phase out thousands of import tariffs and other trade barriers, while also establishing minimum labour and environmental standards.
The full text of the final agreement is expected to be released in the coming months. TPP must first be approved by the governments of the 12 negotiating nations.
