Pakistan tanners unlikely to snap up all of the country’s Eid al-Adha hides and skins

The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA), Muhammad Musaddiq, has warned that this year his members may not be willing to absorb entirely the large volumes of hides and skins that become available each year at the time of the festival of Eid al-Adha.

This year, the festival falls in Pakistan on September 25-27. Mr Musaddiq has said that, because demand for leather from Pakistan from export markets such as China, Turkey and the European Union has declined, tanners are unlikely to want to commit cash to acquiring as much raw material as they usually do during Eid al-Adha.

He said he thought more than 7 million hides and skins would become available to tanners during the days of the festival and broke this down into 4 million goatskins, 2.5 million cattle hides, 800,000 sheepskins and 30,000 camel hides.
