UNIC product labelling court case is ongoing

Italy’s national tanning industry association UNIC has said a court case focusing on the product labelling a number of Italian footwear brands are using in their shoes is ongoing.

UNIC has taken legal action against some footwear Italian retailers for including Italian terms for leather in the labels they put on imported shoes. The leather industry body has argued this may confuse Italian consumers and lead them to think the imported shoes are made in Italy.

The country’s main business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore published a report in mid-July of a decision taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union relating to this case. In this decision, the Court of Justice said the footwear brands can point to European Union directives to justify their use of the labels, even if this goes against national laws in Italy.

In follow-up communications, UNIC has emphasised that the court case against the footwear brands has not yet reached its conclusion.
