Packers around the world exported 184,000 tonnes of beef to China in the first six months of this year, an increase year on year of 17%.

Australian beef commanded a 37.5% share of the total, but at 69,000 tonnes, shipments from Australia over the six-month period were down by 10%.

New Zealand, which now has a free-trade agreement with China, increased its shipments of beef to the Chinese market by more than 33%, taking its total to 32,600. Over the same period, Uruguay increased its exports of beef to China by 37% and, from a much smaller base owing to export restrictions that have only recently been eased, Argentina increased the volume of its beef exports to China by more than 300%.

Other countries looking to increase their share of the beef market in China include Canada, Brazil, the US and Ireland.
