Ugandan government sees the value of the leather supply chain

Elements of the policy include government steps to boost the supply of hides and skins to Ugandan tanneries and to “discourage” the export of raw material. Information minister, Jim Muhwezi, said on announcing the policy that the government will also impose “high tariffs” on imports of footwear and finished leather products to encourage Ugandan consumers to buy products made domestically.
The minister also said Uganda hoped to attract overseas investment into its leather and footwear sectors and said the government has realised that the leather value chain can bring in higher export revenues than shipments of meat, coffee, tea and sugar combined.
