A principal aim is to convince the European Commission to confirm leather as a “green product”. However, the necessary steps include making calculations on the carbon footprint of leather, which the industry has to do hand in hand with three other sectors with links to the cattle industry: meat, dairy and pet food.
In a statement on July 3, Mr González Quijano, said: “Primary data on leather production has been collected in Italy and is now being analysed to see how representative it is. This requires demonstration that tanning processes and technologies are the same in Italy as in other countries.”
He said the EU Leather Pilot will use the Italian primary data to model worldwide production, but added that input from the industry in other countries was now needed to define European the picture in Europe and to demonstrate that tanning technology and processes are the same worldwide. He appealed for information, specifically from tanners in Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, India and Turkey, and said the project set-up offers a guarantee that no commercially sensitive information will be shared.
