Matteo Renzi sings the praises of Italy’s tanning industry
Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, sent a message of enthusiastic support to the country’s tanners in the build-up to the 2015 general assembly of tanning industry association, Unic.

Unic’s outgoing president, Rino Mastrotto, received the message the day before the organisation’s general assembly in Milan on June 25. In it, Mr Renzi said he had been given advance sight of figures relating to the performance of the Italian leather industry that Professor Marco Fortis of the Edison Foundation will unveil at the Milan meeting.

“The numbers Professor Fortis has shown me relating to the Italian tanning industry’s performance in international markets are extraordinary,” the prime minister told Unic. “They inspire pride and you deserve for them to become more widely known.”

Mr Renzi went on to say that the reasons why leather production is of great importance to the Italian economy include the volume of jobs it sustains and its strong export performance. “Among the top 20 products for which Italian manufacturers are the best in the world in terms of balance of trade, you not only contribute two types of leather [vegetable-tanned leather and chrome-tanned leather], but your industry also gives us leather handbags and leather footwear. Winning design, quality, innovation and, above all, your work and passion are the basis of this success.”
